Facelift
(Rhytidectomy)
As people age, the effects of gravity, exposure
to the sun and the stresses of everyday life are seen on the face.
Some of the effects include, deep creases between the nose and mouth,
jowl-like jawline, slack skin and/or extra fat on the neck. A facelift
can help turn back the clock on these effects by removing excess
fat, tightening the underlying muscles and redraping the skin of
the face and neck.
The procedure can be done under general anesthesia. Rhytidectomy
usually takes four to six hours, depending on the extent of the
surgery. It is normally performed as an outpatient procedure. Often
this is done at the same time as eyelid surgery.
After surgery the face may feel tight and sore, however the discomfort
is easily controlled with medication. The head will need to be elevated
for a few days. Activity should be limited for two weeks and strenuous
activities should be limited for four to six weeks. Most people
feel ready to go back in public (and back to work) in two to three
weeks. After surgery, the face has a fresher, more youthful look.
