Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Breast Reduction, also known as Reduction Mammoplasty, is designed for women with very large breasts. Often the size of the breasts can cause medical or psychological problems. Common complaints are back and neck pain, irritation of the skin under the breasts, and breathing problems. Women with very large breasts may also be self-conscious.

The procedure removes breast tissue and skin, making the breasts smaller and firmer. Breast reduction is done under general anesthesia and sometimes requires an overnight stay. Surgery length can vary, but usually takes around three hours. After surgery, there may be some swelling and bruising that will resolve in a few weeks. There will be some discomfort that can be controlled by medication.

Most women return to work in two to three weeks while others may take as long as six weeks depending on the nature of their jobs. Following surgery, the breasts are smaller and better proportioned, making the patient more comfortable, and her clothes fit better.
